Product Information

Large Vintage Turkish Kilim Rug handwoven in the Anamur region of Southern Turkey (they are also known as Kelims).  This traditional kilim is woven using slit weave kilim technique. This rug measures approximately 182x330cm (5.11½ x 10.10ft) excluding tassels - we love the large size of this kelim rug together with the pretty bold ochre medallions and warm brown terracotta tones in the background. This piece is c.1950s. See more about Rug Motifs, Symbols & Meaning here.

Anamur is a town and district of the province of Mersin, on the Mediterranean coast of southern Turkey, between Antalya and the city of Mersin. Anamur is Turkey's southernmost point, a coastal resort famous for its bananas, peanuts and rugs. Turkish Anamur Kilims are often with a stripe design, however they can have bold diamond-shaped medallions with contrasting colours of white and red, dark brown or terracotta, blue and yellow and often a cream natural pastel background which is often undyed grey and brown wool, as you can see they do vary a lot! These flat woven rugs were originally made by the migratory Taurus Yoruks who were of Central Asian Turkic origin. Today the Yoruks lead a semi-nomadic way of life in the southern Taurus mountain region of Anatolia, moving between summer and winter pastures where they set up their encampments (Yayla).  Anamur Kilims are not generally woven for export but are woven for the own use of the weaver.
