11184 Vintage Turkish Afyon Kilim Rug 170x284cm (5.6½ x 6.0½ft)

Large colourful vintage Turkish Kilim from Afyon - hand-woven in flat-weave technique and woven in wool on wool and cotton. This original Kilim measures approximately 170x284cm (5.6½ x 6.0½ft) excluding any tassels - well you can't get much more colourful than this can you! This is quiet a rare piece and we don't find such colourful rugs often, this one has quite a bit of cotton which stays really bright over the years hence the vibrant vivid colours.

These flat woven rugs are made by the Turkmen Yoruk tribes - the descendants of the Turkic tribes that settled in Central Anatolia hundreds of years ago, in the mountainous countryside inland from the Aegean coast. The name Afyon (Kara Hisar) means, literally “opium black castle” in Turkish, since opium was widely grown here and there is a castle on a black rock.  See more about Rug Motifs, Symbols & Meaning here.
