Fine hand-knotted Mamluk Rug from Afghanistan using vegetable dyed wool yarn. This piece measures approx 149x186cm (4.10½ x 6.1ft) - we love the intricate design with the lovely soft colours and elegant, luxurious look!
Originally these rugs were produced in Egypt and continued to be woven after the Ottoman conquest of Egypt in the 15th century. These rugs were produced for domestic use as well as export. During festivals and celebrations, these carpets were used to line the streets as dignitaries paraded the avenues. The designs of most Mamluk carpets are usually made up of a single central medallion reaching out from the centre of the rug, often surrounded by oblong panels which feature motifs of stylized trees and leaf designs. The patterns are very intricate and complex. Find out more about Rug Symbols, Motifs and Meanings Here.
