A dated "1969" Vintage Turkish Emir Dag Kilim village made rug from the outlying villages of a town called Afyon, in Turkey's Aegean region - woven in the flat slit-weave technique. This unique Kelim rug from Turkey is an authentic semi-antique piece and measures approx 124x189cm (4.1 x 6.2½ft) - we love the unusual "stepped" prayer niche design and gorgeous tone of green used in this kilim together with the folk art motifs and emblems - finely woven wool on wool - a rarer piece and not often found these days. Woven by the Turkmen Yoruk tribes - the descendants of the Turkic tribes that settled in Anatolia hundreds of years ago, in the mountainous countryside inland from the Aegean coast. The name Afyon (Kara Hisar) means, literally “opium black castle” in Turkish, since opium was widely grown here and there is a castle on a black rock.
